New York – A 14-year-old boy was the victim of gun violence in New York City on Tuesday after being hit by a bullet outside a Staten Island school.
CBS2’s Tim McNicholas spoke to the victim’s uncle off camera. He says his nephew skipped school and was trying to eat before football practice. Now, he’s asking the medical staff at Staten Island University Hospital North when he can play again.
The gunshot was captured on the dash cam of a car parked near Tottenville High School.
According to NYPD sources, the shooter missed his intended target and instead hit a 14-year-old boy across the campus in the leg. A photo shows first responders trying to help parents as they begin to receive heartbreaking news from their children.
“She texted me, she told me there was a shooting. She told me not to come to school. She told me to stay away, stay away, don’t come,” one parent said.
Children leaving school said five men wearing ski masks jumped out of the car and someone opened fire. Students ran for cover, some along the sidewalk and others back into the school, where everyone was told to take shelter.
“The pictures and the videos were going around and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I know what’s going on with this kid, why do this to him? It has to be an accident,'” said student Sophia Shettenfeld.
“Unfortunately, I’m not surprised,” said Mona Davids with the New York City School Safety Coalition.
They are calling on Mayor Adams to tighten security in schools.
“We need to bring those numbers back to make sure our kids are safe in schools with school safety agents and outside of schools with our NYPD officers,” she said.
The NYPD told CBS2 late Tuesday that no arrests have been made and they are still investigating.
The 14-year-old victim’s uncle says he hopes he makes a full recovery, but the entire family is understandably devastated.
