Two people were injured in a shooting Sunday at the property of Rep. Lee Seldin in Shirley, New York, the congressman and Republican gubernatorial candidate said in a statement. Seldin’s family was unharmed.
“My 16-year-old daughters, Mikayla and Arianna, were doing homework at our house and my wife, Diana, and I were in the car leaving the Bronx Columbus Day Parade in Morris Park,” Seldin said.
Seldin said the two men who were shot were lying under the family’s front porch and in bushes in front of the porch.
“My daughters heard the gunshots and screams, they ran upstairs, locked themselves in the bathroom, and immediately called 911. They were very quick and smart every step of the way, and Diana and I are extremely proud of them.”
Suffolk County police said the shooting was unrelated to the Seldin family. A police spokesperson said that two people who were injured in the incident have been admitted to area hospitals for treatment.
A law enforcement source told CNN that two men were walking down the street about a block from the congressman when a car pulled up and opened fire. When the car sped off, the two men ran to Seldin’s house. Both are expected to survive their injuries, the source added.
Seldin said police investigators came to his home and provided him with security footage from the family’s home cameras. He said that he did not know the names of the two persons.
“My daughters are shaken, but OK,” he said. “Like many people in New York, crime has literally arrived at our front door. My family is grateful to everyone who reached out and we will provide another update when we can.
Seldin has made criticism of rising crime a central issue in his gubernatorial campaign against incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul. In July, he was attacked by a man wielding a sharp object during his election campaign.
Hochul tweeted Sunday evening that he had been informed of the shooting.
“While we await more details, I am relieved to hear that the Seldin family is safe and grateful for the quick response of law enforcement,” she wrote.
