Hailakandi: Two people have been caught trying to smuggle seven primates in a truck in Assam’s Hailakandi district, a senior police official said.
The vehicle was from neighboring Mizoram when it was seized on Monday night.
Hailakandi Inspector General of Police Navneet Mahanta said the truck jumped a checkpoint at Ramnathpur near the Assam-Mizoram border. On being informed, Jamira Police Station personnel set up a naka’ (control) and seized the vehicle.
The animals were found while searching the vehicle, Mahanta said.
The SP said that the driver and the man driving the truck have been arrested.
Veterinarians were called to examine the animals and they were later referred to the forest department.
“The cattle are worth several crores in the international market. We are investigating the matter,” the official added.
