When the officer arrived at approximately 2:46 p.m., he approached the vehicle with his body camera on. ASIRT said the officer “turned quickly” when he heard a single gunshot from the vehicle.
The gunshot prompted the officer to move behind his police vehicle and fire his gun in the man’s direction. According to a Monday ASIRT news release, the officer and the man shot each other before the man exited the vehicle and left the area on foot.
On Friday, a Calgary Police Service officer was also shot and wounded, Chief Mark Neufeld told reporters.

ASIRT said additional police officers and a police helicopter were soon in the area. A helicopter spotted the man at Fish Creek Park around 3 a.m., who appeared to be pointing a gun, even though no one was around at the time.
By the time officers and a canine unit on the ground got to him at 3:26 a.m., they found the gun under his body, police said.
ASIRT said the investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident is ongoing. No further information will be released.
