The last time we heard from the metal band Dreamscapade was in 2018, when they released the epic single “Irregular” and it has been somewhat quiet for four years since then. With line-up changes and changes in band member locations, the original New Delhi-based band now consists of drummer Rishi Baruah from Assam and Oslo-based vocalist Theang Teron, who now takes on guitar and bass duties.
The two artists have released a new song called “Hokvai,” which mixes math and modern metal. Baruah said in a statement, “‘Hokvai’ is about overcoming fear and accepting that change is the only constant.” Teron explained that “Hokvai” translates to “rock” in his native Karbi language. “So the metaphor of this phrase refers to the persistence of endurance in the face of adversity. Metamorphosis, causes the diamond to start as coal,” he added.
Abounding in post-hardcore riffage, Teron’s diverse metal sound ranges from emo growls to guttural screams. The passionate and destructive rhythms have clear influences from bands such as Periphery and Alexisonfire but also lean towards heavy metal-math territory, reminiscent of Hero Protest and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Baruah noted that the song is dedicated to their friend Krishanu Borah, the Assam-born guitarist and songwriter of the metal band Winter Gate, who passed away in November last year.
“Hokvai” follows “Extraordinary” as well as his 2017 debut EP. Software Facts. It’s accompanied by a video that keeps the theme of Halloween horror, bringing together horror scenes as well as scenes from horror movies like The lighting and Psychology.
