Albuquerque police officers responding to an accident in northeast Albuquerque early Saturday shot and killed the driver of a vehicle after an officer saw what appeared to be a gun, authorities said.
The tramway was closed between Rovere and Menoul until 9am on Saturday as authorities processed the scene. The Albuquerque Police Department said on social media that a multi-agency task force is investigating the shooting.
Chief Harold Medina said the incident began shortly after 2 a.m. when officers from the Foothills Area Command were dispatched to an accident involving Tramway and Rover.
“It is believed that some individuals were driving in the middle of the road and were involved in the accident,” the chief said in a briefing posted on Twitter. “When officers arrived they found several individuals in the car.”
Medina said one of the vehicle’s occupants appeared to have passed out, and officers removed a passenger from the vehicle.
“As they were removing the driver from the vehicle an officer indicated there was a gun at the scene and opened fire,” Medina said. Rescuers were called but one person died on the spot, he said.
Medina did not say whether officers fired at him or how many officers fired at the driver.
It was eight people shot and killed by Albuquerque police officers this year. In total, Albuquerque police have been involved in 16 shootings this year. A total of 10 shootings took place last year.
