SILCHAR: A government school in south Assam’s Cachar district has been staffed with only 13 teachers against its student strength of over 1,300 for the past few months.
Ganirgram JR High School is under Katigorah District Council of Dudhpur-Ganirgram GP in Cachar District, about 20 km from Silchar.
Sources said that the school, established in 1947, has around 700 HSLC level students and over 600 HS level students. But it has only 13 teachers, both HSLC and HS. The school does not have teachers for English, Bengali, and History subjects, sources said.
The principal of the school, Afjal Hossain Laskar, said that the school has 31 posts for teachers, but many of them are vacant. Although the issue of lack of teachers has been brought before the schools inspector several times, no action has been taken so far. “School science teacher Rahul Das was transferred to another school in October, although according to records, Rahul Das is still working at Ganirgram JR Higher School, but in reality, he is not,” Laskar said.
Anamul Haque Laskar, the chairman of the school’s management committee, said that it was surprising that the science teacher was transferred to another school even though Ganirgram JR High School was already suffering from a shortage of teachers. He hoped that the condition of the educational center would improve soon.
On Saturday, a group of people of Katigorah including Katigorah MP Khalil Uddin Mazumder submitted a letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, through Cachar district administration, seeking necessary steps to improve the general condition of the school. A copy of the note was also sent to Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.
MP Khalil Uddin Mazumder told him EastMojo On Sunday, he hoped that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would take the matter seriously and initiate appropriate steps to appoint adequate teachers and improve the general condition of the school soon.
