A group of vandals allegedly attacked a Village Defense Party in Assam’s Lakhimpur district injuring six people in the area bordering Arunachal Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.
The incident sparked tension with local units of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) blocking the road to Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday morning.
A senior police officer said that the incident took place in Rupahi Rajgarh area at 1 am on Monday after the VDP questioned four youths from the neighboring region to identify them. driving in the area.
“The VDP released the youths after questioning them. However, after some time they returned with about 40 rioters, who attacked the VDP workers,” he added.
At least six members of the VDP were injured in the incident, according to the official.
At present, there are more than 22,000 registered VDPs in Assam.
AASU demands immediate closure
Protesting against the attack and demanding immediate arrest of the culprits, the local units of AASU blocked the road to the neighboring state on Tuesday.
When senior Arunachal Pradesh government officials reached the spot and gave an assurance of strict action against the culprits, the AASU left the roadblock.
Assam-Arunachal border dispute
Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share a border of 804.1-km in Udalguri, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Charideo districts.
Assam has border disputes with Arunachal Pradesh over 1,200 places, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the state assembly last year.
After independence, Arunachal Pradesh was a centrally administered state. It later became a Union Territory before gaining full statehood in 1987.
