A man accused of randomly shooting four people in four separate shootings early Sunday morning has been arrested after someone close to him filed a complaint with police, authorities said.
“Yesterday I pleaded with the family and friends of the shooting victim to return him. He was unlikely to be taken into custody without incident, but, in fact, someone close to him responded and it was that community. That input allowed police officers to take this person into custody without further violence,” Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said in a Monday news release. said in the conference.
Detroit Police Chief James White said three people were killed and one wounded in the shooting. He added that the suspect had no criminal history, but police had some indications that he had a mental illness.
“This didn’t need to happen,” White said. “Once again, Detroiters are left wondering after a life was randomly taken from our community … There are more questions than answers, but Detroiters can sleep in peace tonight knowing that this suspicion is not in the streets.”
Each of the victims appeared to be randomly targeted and is not believed to be related, White noted. One was waiting for the bus, another was walking his dog and another was on the street, White said. None of them were stolen.
Around 4:45 a.m. Sunday, a woman in her 40s was found shot multiple times, White said. While officers were investigating the shooting, a witness told them there was another victim nearby — a 28-year-old man — who had been shot multiple times. Around 6:50 p.m., another woman in her 40s was found shot multiple times, the chief said.
The fourth victim was shot around 7 a.m. after the suspect was noticed staring at cars and told to leave, White said.
The most critical piece of evidence in the investigation was that all of the shots fired contained 9mm casings, police said.
The casings were taken to the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) office, where it was determined that the same gun was used in all four shootings, Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis said.
After a member of the community identified the suspect, police were able to find a 9mm handgun through a search warrant at the suspect’s home and matched it to the gun used in all four shootings, McGinnis said.
“We mobilized our technology, our personnel, our intelligence and our community assets to investigate these incidents,” White said.
In a statement, White said the suspect “had easy access” to the gun.
Mayor Mike Duggan announced the suspect’s arrest Sunday night and praised police, law enforcement and the public.
“With the help of critical information from the community and strong support from the FBI, ATF and Michigan State Police, Detroit police officers took the suspect into custody today without incident,” he said.
