President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday said that the development of Assam is very important for the overall development of India, expressing his happiness that the infrastructure of the region and the North East will be improved to make life easier for the common people.

President Murmu, who is on a two-day visit to Assam, has emphasized on improving rail, road and water connectivity in the entire North East to promote the much needed development in the development graph of the region.

“The development of Assam is very important for the overall development of India,” she said while addressing a public reception in Guwahati.

“Development in the Northeast is getting a new lease of life and Assam is moving at a faster pace,” she added.

The President highlighted that India’s international connectivity through the Northeast has been boosted by the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

President Murmu said that a good ecosystem is being built by the government to promote tourism in Assam and it will be evident in the near future, generating a large number of jobs.

“There is huge scope to develop tourism in Assam. Kaziranga and Manas (national parks) attract a large number of tourists,” she said.

Praising Assam tea, President Murmu said that it is very important to work for the development of the families of the tea plantation workers.

“I am very happy to share that tomorrow, we will lay the foundation stone of 100 model high schools in the vicinity of Cassam tea plantation,” she added.

The President praised the nationalism of the Assamese people while remembering the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, whose 400th birthday is being celebrated this year.

She pointed out that the National Defense Academy has been giving the best students the Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal every year since 1999 and a statue of him was later erected in the building.

Borphukan is famous for his leadership in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, in which the Mughals’ attempt to conquer the Ahom kingdom was thwarted.

President Murmu said she saw a video of Assam’s rich multifaceted culture on the streets when she arrived at the venue.

“I am very happy about my first visit to Assam as President,” said President Murmu, adding that she will offer prayers to the people of Kamakhya Temple on Friday.
