According to a new report from research company KidsCorp, nearly one in five children in this cohort worry about peer pressure on social media: privacy and surveillance are top concerns for Latin American teens when they’re online.
To gather data for the study, KidsCorp surveyed more than 49,000 children aged 3 to 18 in Chile, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil between April 2021 and March 2022, and then extrapolated the responses from 11 to 12-year-olds. .
Overall, this subset’s concerns have shifted away from broader issues like the economy, climate change, and COVID-19 to settle closer to home (both IRL and online). Across the region, 35% of teenagers say bullying is one of their biggest problems, up from 26% last year (and only poverty at 36% and animal cruelty at 42%).
In terms of overall trends among the study’s broader sample of children, more Latino children are using TikTok at 34%, compared to 26% last year. Roblox (17% vs. 11%) and Disney+ (37% vs. 30%) usage jumped year-over-year.
Respondents also seem to trust the media and advertising more than before. One fifth of children (20%) said they trust the content they see on YouTube, up from 12% last year. And 13% trust the information they see on social media, compared to 8%.
LatAm is currently a popular market for children’s entertainment companies. For toys in particular, this has been a source of significant growth in recent quarters. Jakks Pacific reported a 228% increase in net sales in the region in the second quarter, resulting in one of the best profit quarters in a decade. According to trade organization Licensing International, revenue from licensing sales in the Latin American region grew by 9.5% to US$12.9 billion between 2019 and 2021.
