Law firm Macfarlanes has today announced the launch of the Macfarlanes training scholarship, a unique program developed in-house and offered in conjunction with Brunel Law School at Brunel University London. This scholarship is designed to address the socio-economic barriers that prevent talented students from entering the legal profession.
The scholarship will see the firm support three Brunel law students each year – known as Macfarlanes scholars – through a fully funded scheme from the first year of their law degree.
It is hoped that the experts will become trainees and then join the industry. A new feature of the scholarship is that the successful professionals can become trainers, so the scholarship is reflected in the sign of the training contract. Trainee numbers are being expanded to include specialists so as not to affect other applicants.
The firm will cover the full cost of university tuition, as well as paid work experience, a paid placement year at the firm, and mentoring from senior lawyers across the board. This will greatly reduce the financial burden faced by many social-pocket graduates when they enter the workplace and give participants the opportunity to develop their legal knowledge. and their skills, while building their relationships with the industry.
Senior partner, Sebastian Prichard Jones, said: “Like many organisations, we have thought carefully about how best to attract a wider range of talented students and this program has been targeted one of the concrete works we have done. The aim of our program with Brunel is to provide financial support, advice and paid work experience at the firm, supporting our professionals from their first year through to becoming professional lawyers in the firm, and our friends for the future. ”
Commenting on the partnership, the Chancellor of Brunel Law School, Professor Arad Reisberg said: “I am delighted that Brunel Law School has been selected to work with Macfarlanes on this innovative and unique initiative We are proud of our diverse student body, our strong industry relationships, and our rich and focused programs that prepare our graduates for rewarding careers.
“Our partnership with Macfarlanes will make Brunel Law School even more attractive to talented law degree candidates, and I hope it will set an example of how academia and the private sector can work together.”
The head of graduate recruitment at Macfarlanes, Catherine Morgan-Guest, said: “As an institution with roots in the city, we wanted to work with a London university. After throughout the process we decided to work with Brunel, as they share the same ambitions and goals as ours in terms of training talented students and ensuring that they fit into the workplace and focus much to do. We look forward to working with them on this exciting project.”
In addition to this, which is available to a wider range of students, the institution has launched the Macfarlanes fund. This is a financial support grant open to undergraduate students attending a UK university and studying a course of study. Support includes grants to pay for access to technology, as well as funding for missed work or accommodation costs when attending a Macfarlanes event.
