Guwahati: A fugitive leader of the Popular Front of India (PFI) student wing has been arrested in Bengaluru, the Assam Police said on Saturday.
A team of Assam Police led by a DSP rank officer on Friday night arrested Campus Front of India (CFI) leader Amir Hamja from Bellundur area of Bengaluru where he was hiding with some Tripura families, an official said.
Hamja was granted a three-day stay by the Bengaluru High Court and was brought to Guwahati, the Assam Police said in a statement.
He will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Guwahati, on Monday, she said.
Hamja, a resident of Baksa district in lower Assam, fled shortly after the PFI was banned. The Assam Police tracked them down and arrested them with the help of the Bengaluru Police, the report added.
At least 40 PFI activists have been arrested from different parts of the state so far.
Police have already closed the Assam headquarters in Guwahati’s Hatigaon area as well as their local offices in Karimganj and Baksa after the center banned the outfit.
