SEATTLE (AP) — Police arrested the suspect on a public bus about an hour after a student was shot and killed at a Seattle high school Tuesday morning, officials said.
Mayor Bruce Harrell confirmed at an afternoon news conference that the student died while being treated at the hospital. The victim has not been identified and police declined to say whether the suspect is also a student.
Seattle police said the shooting happened just before 10 a.m. at Ingram High School. Officers entered the school and found a man who had been shot and rendered aid until medics arrived.
Officials provided security to the school. Authorities said the suspect was taken into custody on a King County Metro bus around 11:10 a.m.
The students were released after speaking with the police. Seattle Public Schools canceled school classes Wednesday.
Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz said law enforcement arrived within four minutes of receiving the report and a team immediately went inside to administer emergency first aid to the victim. Seattle Fire Department medics arrived to treat the victim within 10 minutes of the initial call, Diaz said.
Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Brent Jones said the shooting was believed to be a targeted attack.
“We have no reason to believe this is part of a larger scheme,” Jones said.
Jones said the police investigation will reveal more details about what happened in the coming days, but right now his priority is “making sure students and families are safe.”
