GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WILKES) – A former Grand Rapids police officer will face a jury in the death of Patrick Leoya. Grand Rapids District Court Judge Nicholas Ayoub announced his decision Monday for both the defense and the prosecution.
The case now moves to trial, the next step in our quest for full and complete justice for Patrick Leoya’s murder. “Our legal team will continue to fight to ensure that former Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schur and the city of Grand Rapids are held accountable for his actions,” said attorney Wayne Johnson, representing the Leoya family.
Christopher Schur, charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Leoya, was in court to hear a final decision on whether his case will face a jury.
On the final day of Shur’s preliminary examination on Friday, Judge Ayub said he would examine the evidence over the weekend before issuing a written opinion.
Background: A judge will rule if the ex-cop stands trial in the fatal shooting
Schur has been charged in connection with the April 4 slaying of Leoya, 26, in a Grand Rapids neighborhood that followed a traffic stop, a short foot chase and an argument across lawns.
The officer’s body camera video captured the traffic stop, Schurr questioning Leoya and the struggle. Leoya’s shooting was captured on the cellphone of a passenger in his car.
If the judge decided there was not enough evidence to send the case to trial, the charge would have been dismissed.
