ST. LOUIS – The Missouri NAACP says it sent a cease and desist letter to Legal Missouri 2022 on Wednesday, demanding that the organization remove the unauthorized use of the NAACP’s name and logo.
Missouri Act 2022 supports the legalization of recreational drugs in the state, urging voters to approve Amendment 3 on the upcoming November ballot.

According to the NAACP, Legal Missouri has used its name and logo in advertising and promotional materials without consent. On the Legal Missouri 2022 website, St. Louis branches are listed. Louis County, St. Louis City and Columbia of the NAACP as supporters of the 3rd Amendment.
“The Missouri State Congress of the NAACP does not support Amendment 3,” the cease and desist letter reads.
Missouri legislative affairs director John Payne told KOMU 8 about the letter:
“From day one of this campaign, local NAACP leaders have helped write Amendment 3, which is one of the most important constitutional amendments to Missouri’s criminal justice system. in decades. It will automatically decriminalize pre-violent, non-violent marijuana offenses by public vote. We look forward to hearing more support from members of the Missouri Black Legislature tomorrow, not we can look forward to making history next Sunday.”
In an email to KOMU 8, Dan Viets said four local NAACP branches have endorsed the amendment, despite pushback from the state level. Viets was identified in a letter to Legal Missouri. He is a lawyer, consultant and one of the legal experts involved in the creation of Amendment 3 for NORML, the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws.
“This is ridiculous!” Viets wrote about the letter. “We just told the truth. [NAACP President Nimrod] The church is just looking for ads. He knows better.”
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, in October, the Missouri NAACP left some of its chapters in the St. Louis area.
On October 20, the Missouri State Highway Patrol issued a cease and desist to Legal Missouri for allegedly improperly using the MSHP name and logo in an advertisement. The ad argued for the 3rd Amendment’s perceived benefits of legal action, as previously reported by KOMU 8. The Missouri law is a reference to MSHP from the ad.
