Discover has begun rolling out a great feature that could dramatically reduce the likelihood that customers will become victims of identity theft.

Discover Online Privacy Protection is a free service that proactively searches for and destroys your personal data on 10 popular web sites that collect information. This means you will receive less spam and fake emails. You can register for Online Privacy Protection with a simple tap on your smartphone.

Discover introduces online privacy protection

According to Teltech’s analysis, Americans received 11.6 billion fraudulent text messages in March 2022 alone. Scammers and spammers use a variety of websites to collect your information and call, text, or email you.

Online Privacy Protection will automatically remove information such as your name, home address, age, telephone number and email address from the following websites:

  • Intellius.com
  • yellowpages.com
  • Addresses.com
  • PeopleLooker.com
  • AnyWho.com
  • InstantPeopleFinder.com
  • PeopleSmart.com
  • USsearch.com
  • ZabaSearch.com

These 10 sites legally collect and sell your information. Discover Online Privacy Protection will rescan these sites every 90 days or so to make sure your data hasn’t reappeared. This can save you many hours and headaches from trying to delete this information yourself.

If you have the Discover mobile app, you’ll be given the option to enroll in Online Privacy Protection. Only customers of Discover credit cards and banks are eligible for this benefit. In other words, you can’t use it unless you have some sort of Discover account.

All Discover credit cards have no annual fee. The most popular cards include:

  • Discover it® Cashback – Earn 5% cashback in categories that rotate quarterly on up to $1,500 in aggregate spend during activation (1% thereafter) (From October 1st through December 31st, 2022, you can earn 5% cashback on Amazon. com and on digital wallets up to $1,500 upon registration, then 1%). You’ll also earn 1% cash back on all other eligible purchases.
  • Discover it® Miles – Earn 1.5 miles (1.5%) on all purchases.

These cards don’t have a sign-up bonus per se, but for Discover it® Cash Back and Discover it® chrome, Discover will give you all the cash back you’ve earned after the first 12 months of account opening. For Discover it® miles, Discover will match any miles you’ve earned at the end of the first year. This can add up to hundreds of dollars, depending on how often you use your card.
