The mayor of a small Oregon town was arrested Monday on multiple charges, including attempted murder, following a road rage incident.
The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Dovan Jones, the mayor of Rufus, located in the northern part of the state, has been charged with one count of attempted murder and four counts of attempted assault after the shooting. In a family he drives on a highway.
The release says a family was traveling behind an SUV on Highway 281 Monday night when it drove “erraticly” before the SUV suddenly pulled over.
The driver of the family’s car slowed down to get a description of the driver’s car to report the errant driving to the sheriff’s office, but Jones got out of his car and fired multiple shots from a handgun at the family’s car, the office says.
A car containing two adults and two children was damaged in the shooting, but no one was injured. Investigators identified Carr and Jones as the shooter on Tuesday, and he was arrested.
According to the press release, the investigation is ongoing.
A spokesman for the town of Rufus declined The Hill’s request for comment on the arrest.
Jones was elected mayor of the city by 76 votes in 2018, and his term expires at the end of the year. Four electors voted for another, but he faced no other opposition.
Rufus City Council President Scott Holliday said council members have yet to meet to discuss any action that could or should be taken against Jones, NBC reported. He said Jones was well liked and the actions described were out of character.
