Authorities are looking for multiple people suspected of shooting into a crowd outside a Philadelphia bar Saturday night, injuring at least nine people, police said.
The incident happened in the Kensington neighborhood just before 11 p.m., Philadelphia Police Department First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said at a news conference Sunday morning.
Stanford said “multiple suspects” jumped out of a vehicle and opened fire on the crowd outside, then fled in the vehicle.
The individuals “may have found someone they wanted to shoot, got out of the vehicle and started shooting at the group of individuals that were there,” Stanford said. Police are trying to find a possible motive.
All nine adults were taken to a local hospital. Stanford said two of the injured were in critical condition and the other seven were in stable condition.
He said the shooting happened Saturday night in a busy area where officers were heavily patrolling. A narcotics strike force was conducting further operations in the block on Saturday evening when officers of the team heard gunshots.
“We have some shameless individuals in this city who don’t care. “They don’t care how many police officers are here and some of them don’t care how many people are here,” Stanford said.
At least 40 pieces of ballistic evidence have been recovered, he said.
Police have asked people in the area to help with more information as the gunmen were seen exiting a black vehicle. It was a warm evening with many people on the streets and several businesses near the scene of the shooting, Stanford said.
“We will try to collect the video and hopefully get some additional information and video surveillance that may help us identify who is responsible for this,” he said. “It’s always a busy area.”
