Guwahati: In a first-of-its-kind effort, the Assam Police on Sunday organized a ‘Passport Mela’ at Silchar in Cachar district to clear pending passport applications.
Around 1,700 applicants have been given appointments and asked to bring all the documents required for police verification to get their passports.
“The Prime Minister instructed the police to be people-oriented and speed up all the work related to serving the public. Following his call, we have organized this passport Mela to clear pending passport verification,” SP Numal Mahato of Cachar district said.
He said that such initiatives will strengthen the relationship between the police and the community.
The district administration has also been requested to be present there, so that people who need the affidavit can easily use it.
“We have urged people who have genuine documents and police verification is waiting to come here and avail one day,” Mahato added.
The march continued throughout the day, and police officers set up eight tables to increase the efficiency of the one-day service.
The Passport Mela was organized at the Cachar SP office building, which was inaugurated by Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy.
