  • Ronna McDaniel said the RNC can’t pay Donald Trump’s legal bills if he announces his candidacy.
  • The committee has paid about $2.3 million in legal fees for Trump, CNN reported.
  • McDaniel did not say whether Trump would run for president, saying he is “only focused on 2022.”

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel says the committee can’t continue to deal with former President Donald Trump’s legal fees bill if it announces a bid for the 2024 election.

McDaniel spoke to Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Tuesday morning after the outlet reported that the RNC had paid $2.3 million in legal fees for Trump.

“We can’t pay legal bills for an announced candidate,” McDaniel said. “These are the bills that came out of the Letitia James trial that started when she was president. Our executive committee voted for our former president to have a political trial, that’s why.”

The chairman also said: “We cannot give a contribution to a candidate. At this time, he is the former president who is being attacked from all directions and lawsuits.

The Hill reported that the RNC has paid for Trump’s defense in the lawsuits from New York Attorney General Letitia James who is investigating the Trump family over high net worth and the District Attorney of Cy Vance Jr.’s Manhattan

When Bash asked if Trump would announce it and if McDaniel wanted him to run, he said he didn’t know and was “focusing on 2022.”

“My mind can’t go there. I don’t know what I’m going to do for Thanksgiving right now, let alone think about 2024,” McDaniel said.
