A Multnomah County sheriff’s deputy fired his weapon, injuring one person and prompting police to close parts of Northeast Grand Avenue near the Oregon Convention Center on Wednesday as the Portland Police Bureau investigated.
The injured man is being treated at a hospital, but police have not released any other information about the person’s condition or identity. They have not said who shot the man, how many times the deputy shot or why.
The chaotic scene appears to have first unfolded at Northeast Grand Avenue and Holladay Street, where signs of evidence and a black sneaker littered a sidewalk. SUVs from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office pulled up nearby around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Five blocks north at Northeast Grand Avenue and Halsey Street, a man was released from a Portland police SUV with a stranglehold on his neck, then loaded onto a gurney and loaded into an ambulance. A block away, on Northeast Weidler Street, a wrecked gray sedan blocks the road along with two other damaged cars.
Portland Police Bureau spokesman Kevin Allen said in a statement at 4 p.m. that police would release limited information.
“Investigations of this magnitude are extremely complex and require many procedures,” he wrote. “It’s still very early in the investigation and resources are still emerging. Once the preliminary investigation and briefings have taken place, we will begin discussions to release more information internally, through a press briefing or other platform.
Law enforcement is investigating a shooting involving a Multnomah County Sheriff’s Deputy near NE Grand Ave & NE Holladay St. It is a large area with multiple crimes. We are asking people to avoid the area due to road closures and impacts to public transport.
