A fatal officer-involved shooting late Wednesday night at a home on Santa Fe Drive in Colorado City left a suspect dead.
At a press conference Thursday afternoon with Pueblo County Undersheriff David Lucero, he detailed a timeline of events. Beginning at 11:21 p.m., the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office received a report of someone entering the home of a grandmother and her 9-year-old granddaughter on Santa Fe Drive. According to the grandmother, the man was looking for a man named David, and when she told him to leave, he did.
The police reached the spot in search of the man but had no luck. Deputies were preparing to leave around 12:25 p.m. when a suspect approached one of them. At this point the man pulled out a handgun and threatened to shoot one of the deputies.
It was at this point that deputies gave individual verbal commands to drop their weapons. When the suspect did not leave, deputies opened fire on the individual.
Three deputies fired shots at the suspect, and it was unclear if the suspect fired at the deputies. Immediately following the shooting, aid was rendered to the suspect and EMS was called. The suspect died at the hospital.
No deputies were injured in the incident, and law enforcement officials say there is no threat to the public.
The name of the suspect will be released later by the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office, and the deputies involved in the incident are not being released at this time.
You can expect heavy law enforcement in the area for most of the morning.
The shooting remains under investigation and will be handled by the 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team. The three deputies involved in the shooting are on administrative leave with regular pay.
