The opposition Congress in Assam on Tuesday launched a kind of Bharat Jodo Yatra, the party’s ongoing Kanyakumari to Kashmir foot march, to reach out to voters to revive their fortunes in the northeastern state.
The yatra was flagged off from Golokganj in Dhubri district of western Assam by Congress general secretary for Assam, Jitendra Singh.
State division chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, Lok Sabha MP from Assam Gaurav Gogoi and several senior leaders participated in the event on the first day. The yatra will pass through 13 of Assam’s 33 districts and cover 834 km in 70 days and will end at Sadiya in Tinsukia district in the east of the state.
“The yatra will cover 5 of the 14 parliamentary constituencies in the state and 60 of the 126 assembly constituencies, and will interact with the public and grassroots party workers,” Borah said before the march.
Before starting the yatra, Borah and other leaders visited several religious places in Dhubri including Mahamaya Temple, Panbari Mosque, Tegh Bahadur Gurudwara and Ram Rai Kuthi Satra. The leaders also addressed a public forum in Golokganj.
Apart from Dhubri, the yatra will cover Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup (Rural), Kamrup (Metropolitan), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.
According to the idea of the 3570-km-long line from Kanyakumari to Kashmir Bharat Jodo Yatra, led by senior leader Rahul Gandhi, the march in Assam will also have several yatras in places that will not be covered in the main event.
Apart from re-engaging party workers and the general public, the party aims to revive its dwindling fortunes in the state. The Congress has faced setbacks in state elections at the parliamentary, assembly, district and panchayat levels since the 2014 general elections and in the last one year two MLAs from the party have quit the party to join the ruling party. of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The BJP, however, termed the Congress yatra in Assam as a show and said it will not be able to win over voters.
“It is surprising that a party like the Congress, which followed the principle of divide and rule during its decades of rule in Assam and other parts of India, is conducting the Bharat Jodo Yatra. It will be a check.” “It’s a real big shame on the party that it has lost all touch with the public,” said Rupam Goswami, BJP spokesperson.
