The British government is being threatened with legislation over the uniform of the King’s Guard – it may be fur this time.
The Ministry of Defense (MoD) has been accused of ‘lacking due consideration’ of non-toxic fur varieties even before declaring that real fur would be divested if a suitable resource was found.

According to vegan charity PETA, the MoD agreed to remove fur-trimmed hats if the material was waterproof and the fibers were the same length as bear fur.
PETA says it has ‘spent years and thousands of pounds developing and testing’ ECOPEL – a ‘faux bear fur’ that ‘meets MoD requirements’.
However, it accuses the government of ‘not accepting what it has done’.

“The MoD has said a lot that it will try PETA’s furries against it,” said Lorna Hackett, PETA’s legal counsel from Hackett & Dabbs LLP.
“Recently in the July 2022 parliamentary debate, the former minister of commerce said that he was not married to the bear skin, and repeated the agreement in principle if a suitable replacement was presented, and the fur was removed.
“Despite this, the MoD has refused to publish test results that show the fur exceeds standards. PETA has no choice but to pursue a legal review on in matters of mismanagement.”
Petition
PETA’s legal threats follow the government’s response to an online petition calling for the King’s Guard hats to be replaced with faux fur.
After more than 100,000 signatures, the petition was presented to the Parliament, where the government decided: “At this time we have no intention of stopping the use of bear skins. The used bear skins are the result of licensing by Canadian authorities to control the wild bear population.
