Miami – Surveillance video shows part of what led up to a recent shooting at a strip mall in the South Miami Heights neighborhood of Miami-Dade County.
Devon Parker, who was arrested for firing while not licensed to carry a weapon, said he acted in self-defense when he opened fire Oct. 27 near the corner of Quail Roost Drive and Southwest 114th Avenue.
Parker, 29, of Homestead, said he had just gotten a haircut and was a passenger in the white Lexus. The video shows how a group of people approached the car as it exited the parking lot.
“They tried to jump me,” Parker said during a phone call from Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
In the video, one can be seen kicking a car and at least two others brandishing a gun. It also shows Parker sticking his hand out the passenger window and firing a weapon.
Christopher Goodes was injured, according to the police report. According to the report, one of them shot Parker in the leg.
Police officers arrested Parker at Baptist Health Homestead Hospital on October 27 at 4:40 p.m. Corrections officers booked Parker at 6 a.m. on Oct. 28, records show.
Eyewitnesses said that they provoked Parker and the driver who was with him. Parker’s brother Louis Parker said they were relatives who had a beef with his brother.
“There’s only hatred in their hearts,” Lewis Parker said.
Devon Parker was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon on Dec. 18, 2011, and sentenced to five years in prison on Nov. 25, 2014, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. Released on June 1, 2017.
Prior to his recent arrest, his probation was set to expire on July 11, 2026, records show. He is now charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, firing a deadly missile and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
