Police said Friday that three of the teenagers will be charged with murder in the September shooting deaths of five young football players outside Roxborough High School.

Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanor said 15-year-old Troy Fletcher and 17-year-old Syhid Jones may face new murder charges in the Sept. 26 killing of 19-year-old Tahmir Jones in North Philadelphia.

Police hope to charge Dayron Burney-Thorne, 16, who remains at large in the Roxborough case, with murder.

On September 26 around 2 p.m., Tahmir Jones was walking in front of his father’s home in the 600 block of North 13th Street when three gunmen jumped out of their car and shot him more than 20 times. Jefferson was rushed to the hospital but died a short time later.

Mother Teresa Guyton said Jones had earned his GED and was working in a construction apprenticeship program.

Twenty-four hours after Jones was killed, according to police, the shooters, along with two others, targeted a group of children after their football game, unleashing more than 60 bullets as they walked into their locker room. Nicolas Elizalde, 14, was killed and four other teenagers were injured.

Vanor said police have no evidence that Tahmir Jones’ slaying and the Roxborough shooting are connected beyond the suspects and that Jones may have been targeted by mistaken identity.

He said police were investigating whether the shooters were connected to other crimes in the area. According to court documents, bullet casings recovered from the scene in Roxborough were linked to three firearms used in other incidents.

This is breaking news and will update.
