Toronto police are appealing for information and witnesses after three people were shot, one fatally, at an indoor soccer and basketball facility in North York over Thanksgiving weekend.
Shots were fired near the La Liga sports complex near Finch Avenue West and Alness Street west of Dufferin Street just after 7pm on Sunday.
Edwin Farley Alvarado Quintero, 49, of Woodbrigg, was taken to a local trauma center where he died Monday morning. His is the city’s 56th homicide of the year.
Two other victims were hospitalized, one with life-threatening injuries. The police described the injuries of another person as serious.
Speaking to CP 24 outside TPS headquarters on Monday, Det. Shannon Whitehead urged anyone who knows anything about the shooting to come forward.
“We believe there were multiple people at the scene at the time of the incident and we are looking for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward, anyone with visuals, video footage or any description of the suspect,” she said. “Any little bit of information would help the investigation.”
Whitehead said the suspect has so far only been described as a man in his mid-20s. He was last seen wearing all dark clothing and a mask, she said.
Investigators are also still working to determine what led to the shooting, which police have not described as targeted at this point. Multiple shell casings were found at the scene.
It is unclear exactly what was going on inside LaLiga when the shooting took place. According to the complex’s website, the venue hosts indoor soccer games, salsa, zumba, birthday parties and other activities.
The Homicide and Missing Persons Division is investigating.
