STATEN ISLAND, NY – A day after a 14-year-old student was shot in the ankle steps from Tottenville High School’s main entrance, police continue to search for five people of interest in connection with the incident.
Here’s the latest on the ongoing situation and Tuesday’s shooting.
The NYPD is looking to identify five potential suspects

According to a statement from the NYPD’s deputy commissioner of public information, five individuals were walking on Luton Avenue and Desius Street, across from Tottenville High School, on Tuesday at 1:50 p.m. Guns were also fired several times at an unknown target.
All five individuals fled the location on Decius Street on foot and then separated, with three individuals going to Androvet Avenue and two individuals to Huguenot Avenue.
Police said in a statement that it was unclear at this time which person pulled out the gun.
The intended target of the victim

According to police, the teenager was not the intended target of the violent attack, which happened as he walked off school grounds.
A 14-year-old boy is an unsuspecting victim while dropping out of high school. He was shot once in the ankle.
According to a police statement, an NYPD school safety agent applied a tourniquet to the victim until EMS arrived.
EMS transported the injured child to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze.
Students at the high school sheltered in place and a controlled dismissal occurred.
A video circulating on social media captured moments after multiple gunshots rang out near the high school.
The eight-second clip, taken from a car dashboard camera, shows vehicles passing in front of the school as eight shots ring out in just three seconds.
After the shots are finished, the sound can be heard in the distance.
Elected officials respond to shooting

Borough elected officials have called for increased police presence in schools and changes to current state laws.
Borough President Vito Fossella called Tuesday’s shooting “horrific” during an impromptu press conference a block away from the high school.
“What happened today is a tragedy; There is a family whose son was shot and killed, which should not be on this day. . . In this society too,” he said.

A student who knew the victim said the victim was a “sweet kid” and the bullet was not aimed at a child. “I don’t think it was meant for him. It seems that someone is near him. He never did anything. “
Students who spoke to Advance/SILIV.com said the incident happened while they were walking to class between periods.
Students said they heard sirens before police arrived on the scene. Then the messages started flowing in the group chats.
“They said we should be sheltered,” one student said of the school’s faculty. “They got on the loudspeaker and said it’s not a drill,” another student said.
An employee at the school called the incident “disturbing,” adding, “They really need to do something about crime.”
After the school’s containment measures were lifted, students were seen streaming out of the building – reuniting with parents, some of them crying, who rushed to the scene to pick up their children. A parent who spoke to Advance/SILive.com expressed dismay at the lack of real-time communication during the incident.
Increased police presence

There was a visible police presence at the school, with at least two NYPD vehicles stationed near the main entrance. Once inside the school grounds, school staff could be heard loudly ordering him to empty his pockets and put everything inside his backpack.
“Everyone is understandably a little shaken up, but I’m confident that the police will maintain a strong presence here and everyone will feel safe,” Jeff, a parent of a new student at the school, told Advance/SILive.com. “Keeping your child home from school, not letting them in, being scared, that’s not the answer. I don’t think that’s an answer. Even if this is not the intention of yesterday’s people, it is a harmful side effect.
