Police in Aurora, Colorado have arrested and charged a truck driver in connection with a fatal shooting Friday morning.
Iowa-based truck driver John Thoren, 42, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 46-year-old Rachel Holmes.
The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 28 in a parking lot at 6360 S. Parker Road in Aurora.
According to police arrest records obtained by KDVR, Thoren told police he was sleeping in the parking lot when Holmes threw several rocks at the driver’s side of his truck, hitting the window.
Thoren said he told Holmes to stop and pointed his gun at her, but she continued to throw rocks. He opened the door of his truck and told Holmes, “If you don’t stop, you’re going to get shot.”
Thoren says this is what prompted Holmes to charge and shoot him, fearing for his own safety.
Police found Holmes lying on the ground near the semi truck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thoren said he called 911 moments after the shooting and acted in self-defense. Police say he has cooperated with the investigation.
Thoren’s truck was not significantly damaged, according to the KDVR report.
Thoren denied having sex with Holmes or seeing her before the incident.
Thoren told police he made a delivery at a nearby store and fell asleep in the parking lot because it was after hours.
Holmes has been arrested multiple times over the past several years on charges including disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and assault on police officers, but the charges were dropped following a mental health evaluation, CBS News reports.
