Guwahati The water and electricity connections of former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta’s residence inside the Assam Assembly building were closed on Wednesday as he did not shift to a new accommodation despite receiving several notices to do so, officials said.
Mahanta is no longer an MP and his official residence is not the responsibility of the House Secretariat, officials said.
Department of General Administration Government of Assam it is the nodal body to provide accommodation to former minister.
“During April, the Assembly Secretariat decided to build new multi-storied houses for MPs instead of the old Assam type houses. Therefore, notices were sent to all the MPs in the first week of May to vacate. building,” a senior official told PTI.
Assam-style houses have bamboo or reed mesh walls, plastered wooden frames and earthquake-resistant wooden floors.
Some of the councilors live in the local six-storey tower block, while many live in the old houses because of available spaces, he added.
The Assembly Secretariat has decided to pay Rs 60,000 per month to each of the MLAs, who will take a rented house outside the high security complex in Dispur area, until the new towers are ready, said the official who requested that anonymous.

Mahanta has been living in the council house which was created by joining 54, 55 and 56, since 1985 when he became the chief minister for the first time.

The wife of former minister Joyasree Goswami Mahanta said that they have already moved to the new quarters.
“As the work is going on, the workers cut the power line. However, the water connection is still there,” she told reporters.
