One person was killed and eight others were injured in a mass shooting in Tallahassee just before midnight Saturday. An armed man was also shot by the police. Details are still emerging as the Tallahassee Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit continues to investigate.

What happened on Saturday night?

Police were controlling a crowd of several hundred people in the West Pensacola Street area near the Florida State University campus Saturday night when “multiple individuals within the crowd” began shooting near Liquor’s and Los Compadres at halftime, according to a TPD press release.

According to TPD’s Facebook post, police chased and apprehended the suspected gunman.

Not determined. While the release referred to “multiple individuals,” police only mentioned one person who was seen firing into a large crowd before running into a McDonald’s.

According to the release, officers told the man to drop the weapon and “then shot the subject in an attempt to stop the threat and prevent more individuals from becoming victims.”

Officers found a man with a gunshot wound at halftime liquors and immediately began administering life-saving aid. “The victim, an adult male, succumbed to his injuries at the scene,” police said.

Five other men and three women in the crowd were shot and taken to local hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to serious, TPD spokeswoman Heather Merritt said.

Also, the police shot an armed man. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the officers who shot the suspect have been placed on administrative leave, per protocol.

Where did the Tallahassee mass shooting take place?

Police said multiple incidents took place on West Pensacola Street at Half Time Liquors, located at 2101 West Pensacola Street, and Los Compadres, located at 2102 West Pensacola Street. The area is close to the FSU campus and athletic complex.

“This is a huge incident,” said Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell. “There are several locations involved in this incident, but yes, we believe this is an isolated incident.”

Three people were taken into custody at the scene Saturday, but charges and suspect names were not available as of Monday morning. A gunman is also in custody, along with two others who were taken into custody on unrelated charges.
