CHARLOTTE – Police confirmed to Channel 9 that a fight at a restaurant near Northlake Mall on Tuesday night led to a shooting.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Maj. Brad Koch said officers were called to the Fox & Hound restaurant on Center Lake Drive just after 11 p.m. Tuesday. The road separates from Northlake Center Parkway.
When they arrived, investigators found Jamiel Clements, 21, dead of a gunshot wound outside, Koch said. The coach confirmed that he was rushed to the hospital but died a short time later.
Detectives said Clements and his shooter had previously argued inside the restaurant. That fight continued outside the scene of the shooting, Koch said.
The owner of a nearby restaurant shared with Channel 9 surveillance video of the moments before the shooting.
Five gunshots could be heard in the video. The footage was handed over to the police.
Donnie Thomas Cosby says he is the brother of the 21-year-old who was shot.
“He was on his way out,” Thomas-Cosby said. “Be a grown man. Moving out of the mother’s nest. Getting his driver’s license. Free and independent. old man He was an innocent child all his life.
Thomas-Cosby said her brother and the gunman were not close. One of them was drunk and asked to come out when he opened fire.
“We are canvassing businesses [they have] “Video that we can use with the technology we have,” Koch said. “We hope to have some video surveillance as part of the investigation.”
Koch said no one was in police custody. He added that investigators do not believe Clements and the suspect had any previous relationship.
Channel 9’s Anthony Kustura spoke with a man who said he worked with the victim at Fox and Hound. He said he was devastated by the news and wanted the police to find his friend’s killer.
“You killed someone. They have a family and at the end of the day you have to think about that,” he said. “What started this, what happened — at the end of the day, he had a family.”
Koch acknowledged that the area is part of an area where officials are focusing their efforts.
“Certainly, we’ve had some challenges with crime in and around the area because it’s so close to Northlake Mall,” he said. “We have incidents in and around here and that is certainly an area of focus for our officers in the North Division.
Koch asked anyone with information who may have been in and around the restaurant at the time of the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. You can also call 704-432-TIPS and speak to a homicide detective. Detective Dudley is the lead detective on the case.
