Thirteen Left wing militants, who were associated with former CPI (Maoist) leader Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias ‘Kanchan Da’ who was arrested earlier this year, surrendered in Dibrugarh and Cachar districts of Assam, as per said a senior police officer.
“13 banned CPI-M cadres joined today – leaving the path of violence – Dibrugarh and Cachar. They are working with CPI-M leader Aru Kumar Bhattacharjee @ Kanchan da who was arrested earlier this year by @assampolice,” Special Director General of Police, GP Singh said in a tweet on Thursday.
Veteran CPI (Maoist) leader and member of its central council, Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee, known by the nom de guerre ‘Kanchan Da’, was arrested in Cachar district on March 6 this year.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Dibrugarh, Bitul Chetia said earlier on Thursday that nine people claiming to be Maoist cadres have approached the government to surrender and the district police are confirming their links with the CPI (Maoist).
While one was known to have links with militants, there is no information about the other in the police records, the ASP said.
Two more suspected CPI (Maoist) associates were arrested in Dibrugarh earlier this month and one pistol, magazine and ammunition were seized from them, Chetia said.
Another person linked to ‘Kanchan Da’ was also arrested in Cachar a few weeks ago based on information received from a senior Naxal leader during interrogation, a senior police official said.
72-year-old ‘Kanchan Da’ has been tasked to form a regional committee of the CPI (Maoist) in Assam and create a “red road” from the neighboring country to other Maoist-affected states in India like Jharkhand. , Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh among others, the police said at the time of the arrest.
