BALTIMORE – A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was shot in the head Monday afternoon in Southeast Baltimore, police said.
Officers responded to the 1400 block of East Fayette Street for a ShotSpotter alert at 5:19 p.m., where they located the victim.
Investigators believe a gunman “indiscriminately” opened fire on a car on the street where a large group of people were.
“This assailant fired into the vehicle, possibly intending to shoot the occupants of the vehicle, but was minding his own business and shot a young man who was standing outside,” Harrison said. “Right now we have a seriously injured man in the hospital.”
Given the severity of her injuries, homicide detectives have taken over the investigation, police said.
A second man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds walked into Johns Hopkins Hospital shortly after the shooting, Harrison said, and police are trying to determine if the victim is connected to the same shooting.
Harrison said at least one person in the crowd saw what happened and urged anyone with information to call police.
“This brazen and cowardly act is totally uncalled for,” he said. “Once again people have fired indiscriminately into a crowd where everyone is right there watching and taking responsibility.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 410-396-2100. Those wishing to remain anonymous can use the Metro Crime Stoppers tip-line at 1-866-7LOCK-UP.
Mayor Brandon Scott condemned the shooting Monday night, calling it “indiscriminate.”
“Gun violence is always senseless and tragic, but even more so when an innocent child goes about her day. A child caught in the crossfire of careless action fueled by petty conflicts involving individuals who cannot properly resolve issues. And individuals with access to illegal firearms. Keep illegal guns off our streets while simultaneously investing in our communities. It’s an unfortunate reminder that users must continue to remove.”
