A suspect is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting at a south Birmingham apartment complex in September.

Birmingham police announced Friday that 19-year-old Lavell Ondaria Burton was arrested. 19-year-old Stephen Lawrence Scott Jr. has been charged with murder in the shooting.

Burton is also charged with attempted murder, first-degree robbery and aggravated battery in a vehicle.

Scott was killed Sept. 20 at the Adona Apartments in Aspen Run on Green Springs Highway.

Birmingham police received 911 calls about the shooting just before 10 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived they found a wrecked vehicle in the entryway parking lot.

They found Scott unresponsive inside the vehicle. Investigators determined that he had been shot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service at 10:18 p.m

Police later found a second victim. He was taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the shooting began in the breezeway, where investigators found multiple shell casings. “Based on the amount of rounds fired, we believe we have more than one shooter,” he said.

He said investigators believe the victims were targeted.

Multiple vehicles and apartment units in the complex were damaged in the shooting.

Burton was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Thursday at 5:36 p.m. He is in prison on charges of murder and non-bailable. His bonds total $180,000 on other charges.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
