Fort Bend County, Texas — Lamar CISD arrested two students Thursday afternoon after it said it received hoax calls about a “possible threat” on one of its campuses, according to the district.
Deputies with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of an active shooter at George Ranch High School, but said they found no signs of a shooting.
As a precaution. Deputies scanned the area and determined the call was most likely a “false” call.
“Swatting calls take vital county resources away from those who need emergency assistance,” said Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan. “If FBCSO finds someone making such calls, we will seek charges.”
Lamar CISD said the campuses were immediately locked down when they learned of the threat. Additionally, the neighborhood’s middle school and junior high school were made safe. In a secure situation, the exterior doors are locked, but the campus continues to operate as normal inside.
The district said it has learned three students made the false call, two of whom are now in custody.
According to the statement issued by the district administration regarding the incident.
“This afternoon, Lamar CISD received information from Fort Bend Police officers who were on their way to George Ranch High School in response to a threat.
As per standard procedure, the campus immediately went into lockdown. During a lockdown, all doors to and from a campus are locked.
Additionally, we made the neighborhood middle school and junior high school a safe haven. In a secure situation, the exterior doors are locked, but the campus continues to operate as normal inside.
Within 30 minutes, law enforcement officers on the scene determined there was no active and credible threat. Additionally, they were able to identify the source of the initial call(s), determining that it came from three students — two of whom are now in custody.
We are grateful for the quick response and support of the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department and our campus and district police officers.
As a result of today’s disruption, we will have a police presence and Counseling Response Team members on campus today to support staff and students who may need it. Although the threat has been determined to be a hoax, we understand that our staff and students have very real feelings as a result of their experience, and we always want to look out for each other.
I want to emphasize again that the safety of our students and staff is always our number one priority. We are proud of the culture of safety we have built at George Ranch High School and are committed to maintaining a safe school environment for all of our students.
