Guwahati, November 4: The Assam government on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mumbai-based Bright Star Investments Pvt Ltd to upgrade the academic infrastructure of the second medical college in Guwahati.
The chairman and secretary to the government of Assam, Siddharth Singh, and the promoter and founder of Bright Star Investments Pvt. Ltd, Radhakishnan Damani, signed the MoU at a function held at Janata Bhawan here in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Health Minister Keshab Mahanta.
It is the first time that the regional administration is cooperating with the construction of the infrastructure of the medical college in the region.
Terming the occasion as historic, Chief Minister Sarma said the association would mark a new beginning for medical education in Assam.
He thanked the founder of the company for coming forward with the philanthropic efforts and for choosing Assam as the first state to start the prestigious partnership.
“Almost sixty years ago, in 1960, the first medical college was established in Guwahati to cater to the needs of the people of the state as well as the neighboring states. Since then, the population of the state has doubled and so has the number of students aspiring to pursue medical education,” said Sarma.
“Considering the growing demand, the government has taken several measures to increase medical education opportunities and advanced health care facilities by establishing medical colleges in different parts of the state. However, the second medical college in Guwahati, which is the nerve center of the Northeast’s economic and social activities, has been a felt need for some time,” he said.
“Therefore, taking reasonable steps to address these requirements, the state government has undertaken the task of establishing a medical college in Guwahati with a 1000-bed hospital and an educational institution with hostels for boys and girls so that every year take it. of 100 MBBS students,” he added.
It may be mentioned that Bright Star Investments has come up with a CSR contribution of Rs 150 crore for the development of infrastructure in the academic block, graduate and internship hostels of the medical college here.
The minister further said that the regional government is working on a vision to implement one medical college in each district of Cassam region.
“Therefore, the government has taken measures to establish 15 new medical colleges in addition to the previous nine. Out of the 15 new medical colleges, seven will be established at Nalbari, Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Charideo, Biswanath Chariali and the second medical college at Guwahati,” Sarma said.
“The government will start construction of five more medical colleges in Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Marigaon, Tamulpur and Dhemaji during this month and work on three proposed medical colleges in Sivasagar, Karimganj and Goalpara will be taken up soon, ” he said.
