Chicago (WLS) — A man shot in the head during a drive-by shooting in East Garfield Park has died and 13 others were injured, his family said.
The shooting happened just after 9 p.m. on Halloween near California Avenue and Polk Street as a large group gathered for a balloon release and tribute to a woman who died of natural causes.
CPD said a 15th person was also hospitalized after being hit by a car.
Pierre Riley was hit in the head and fought for his life for three days before succumbing Friday afternoon. His family says he has been on life support since the shooting and has not regained consciousness.
Riley was attending a vigil in the corner for one of her close friends.
“He was loved and adored by everyone around him,” his stepmother, Artkeshia McGee, told ABC7 the day after the shooting.
Police believe they are searching for two suspects who fired shots from a dark-colored SUV. They were last seen driving south from the scene to California.
Police said the shooters fired indiscriminately at the crowd.
Brown said the shooting ended moments later. It was captured on POD video, which police are reviewing.
No motive for the shooting is known at this time, and Brown said there were no known conflicts on the corner Monday night.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Chicago Police, and a reward of up to $15,000 is being offered for information leading to charges and/or convictions in this incident.
No one is in custody.
