The Assam Police on Saturday arrested a resident of Manipur from Sonapur area of Kamrup district (Metro) for allegedly driving Yaba tablets worth Rs. ₹15 crore, an official said.
According to the police, more than 60,000 Yaba tablets were recovered from a four-wheeler from the Meghalaya side.
Based on a tip-off, the Guwahati city police launched a search operation led by Joint Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta on Saturday morning. They seized a vehicle with registration number DL-7CK-8778 at Nazirakhat gate near Sonapur, police officials said.
“The car from a neighboring state was thoroughly searched and we seized 60,000 Yaba pills from the hidden compartments of the car. The market value of the seized contraband drugs is estimated at approx ₹15 crore,” said Partha Sarathi Mahanta.
The arrested person has been identified as Mohammad Ajmal Khan (30), a resident of Thoubal district in Manipur.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the state police for their successful operation. He shared the information on Twitter, calling it “glorious joy”.
“The continuous efforts of the Assam Police against narcotics are highly appreciated. continue from there,” Sarma wrote.
Recently, several residents of other states have been arrested in Assam with drugs, hashish and other narcotics. On October 27, two drivers were arrested in Guwahati for transporting more than 2,500 cannabis from Manipur.
They were identified as Ashok Kumar, a resident of Haryana and Jitendra Kumar, a resident of Uttarakhand.
The estimated value of the seized hashish was approx ₹15 crore, according to Partha Sarathi Mahanta.
