Bhubaneswar, November 6: Law students should not be satisfied with studying law books but broaden their horizons by analyzing everything that comes their way to gain perspective. justice of society, said Justice Debabrata Dash, Judge of the Orissa High Court, on Tuesday.
“You should think about delving deep into the legal system and try to understand it again to increase your knowledge and perspective,” Justice Dash said at the 12th Orientation Program for the new students. Justice Dash said that the goal of law students should not be to pass out of the university with good marks but to keep an eye on the activities and developments of the society. “Your future is not based on the grades you get in the exams, but on how you perform in your chosen field,” he said.
Congratulating the students for choosing to study law, he said they have chosen a good university with good teachers.
The program, conducted by the Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Pradipta Kumar Nanda of SOA, was also briefed by two eminent lawyers, Surya Prasad Mishra and Sanjit Mohanty. Professor SAK Azad, Dean of the university, Prof. Jayadeb Pati and Prof. Prabir Kumar Patnaik, two senior professors, also spoke.
Freshers admitted to BA LL.B (Hons), BBA LL.B (Hons), LL.B (Hons) and LL.M courses.
Mishra, a former Advocate General of Odisha, said that a student of law should continue to study throughout his life, pointing out that education, common sense and wisdom are the keys to a successful legal career.
Advising the freshmen to develop the habit of reading all kinds of books that will enhance their thinking, he said they should seek advice from teachers to reach the world level. “You have to participate in all curricular activities including debates and Moot courts to understand,” he said.
Mohanty said students studying law had the opportunity to become lawyers, join civil service or work in the corporate world. “You provide a great field, and give an opportunity to become a lawyer-politician like Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi or P. Chidambaram,” he said “you should also read the biographies of eminent lawyers like MK Nambiar, Nani Palkhivala, Soli Sorabjee and Fali Nariman.
