Indian boxer Shiva Thapa on Sunday became the first male boxer in Asian history to win six medals after beating Minsu Choi of South Korea to reach the semi-finals in Amman, Jordan. In the other quarter-final, Thailand’s gold medalist Aannta Chopade (54kg) was eliminated after losing 0-4 to Seidekmatov Sanzhai of Kyrgyzstan.
On Saturday night, Anikushita Boro (56kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg) defeated Tsubata Arsia of Japan and Valentina Khalzova of Kazakhstan, respectively, to advance to the semifinals.
Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina, making her international debut at 75kg, had to work hard to secure a 3-2 victory over 2016 world champion Khalzova.
The Assam boxer, who won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics at 69kg, has moved up to 75kg, as her previous weight did not feature in the Paris Olympics.
However, it was the end of the road for Pooja (70kg), who lost 0-5 to Kazakhstan’s Dariga Shakimov in the last eight bouts.
Earlier on Saturday, debutants Minakshi (52kg) and Preeti (57kg) and world champions bronze medalist Parveen booked their semi-final berths.
Five Indian men’s wrestlers – Narender (92kg), Naveen Kumar (92kg), Lakshya Chahar (80kg), Sumit (75kg) and Sachin (71kg) – will enter the ring on Monday to compete at the quarter-final level.
