ORLANDO (WKMG) – The sheriff said two girls were hiding when Shawl Jordan Jones started shooting at a home in Myers around 4 a.m. Friday.

While in the hospital recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, detectives continue to search for answers, authorities said.

“Understanding these tragedies is never easy,” said Orange County Sheriff John Mina.

A 49-year-old woman, her two daughters and a 4-year-old granddaughter were killed in the Friday morning shooting on Myers Drive, he said.

Apparently some sort of argument led to this.

Detectives said an argument between the shooter and his girlfriend led to the shooting.

“At some point, Jones began removing his belongings from the home, then re-entered the home and began shooting,” Mina said.

Two girls aged 4 and 6 survived.

“They were hiding under blankets when the shooting started and luckily, we found them unharmed,” Mina said.

The sheriff said their mother, who had been shot, went to a neighbor’s house to call for help. That call led deputies to a tragic discovery.

“They entered the home on Myers Drive and found three women and a young child, all family members, with gunshot wounds to the head,” Mina said.

Investigators spent several hours at the scene Friday, trying to piece together what happened and why.

The sheriff described the crime as “horrific”.

“I am a father and I cannot imagine or comprehend such an event,” Mina said.

He said the tragedy left behind a mother and two girls without most of the family.

“Even though it’s very difficult for our detectives, because they’re all moms and dads and aunts and uncles, they’re going to work really hard to find some answers and put the pieces together,” Mina said.
