Madrasas in Assam have been asked to provide all information about their institutions, including location and profile of teachers employed, to the state government on December 1, a senior official said on Wednesday.

The December 1 deadline was set on Wednesday in a meeting with Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, director of higher education Mamata Hojai, other government officials and representatives of madrasas, the official said.

“Madrasas should submit the information to the directorate of higher education through the agencies they work under,” the official said.

Several madrassas in the region have come down after teachers working in these institutions were arrested in the region earlier this year for alleged links to Al-Qaeda in India (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

A total of 47 people, including teachers, have been arrested in the region this year on suspicion of having links with fundamentalist organizations.
