Casual clothes like t-shirts, jeans and leggings are banned in the Assam Assembly.
Assam Assembly Secretariat has prescribed formal wear like salwar suit, sari, mekhela-chador and official shirt and trousers for its employees on all working days.
“Normal clothes like t-shirts, jeans, trousers, etc., will not be allowed for work. Traditional clothes of every community in Assam must be worn every Wednesday as per the wishes of the employee,” the order issued by the Chief Secretary of the Assam Legislative Assembly. November 7 read.
It also said that all employees regardless of rank should wear office uniforms, to be prescribed and provided by the Secretariat of the Assembly, compulsorily during the sessions of the Assembly and any other official time.
Any employee who fails to comply with the instructions will face strict action. In addition, any employee who fails to meet the required hours of work will be liable for the deduction of his monthly salary,” the Order said.
Employees have been instructed to come to the office at 9:30 am sharp, confirm attendance through the biometric attendance system and leave only after working hours. They are also told to perform tasks beyond working hours depending on the need and urgency of the work.
In 2017, the Assam government introduced a voluntary dress code asking employees to attend office in traditional attire on the first and third Saturdays of every month. This confused the old enthusiasm of the workers, including the bureaucrats.
