GUWAHATI: The Assam police on Thursday arrested a police inspector for taking “illegal satisfaction” from the family of a man arrested for allegedly killing a 13-year-old girl.

Raj Mohan Ray, the suspended SP of Darrang, was arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He allegedly received Rs 2 lakh from the family of accused Krishna Kamal Baruah, an SSB jawan, through Utpal Borah, then the officer in charge (OC) of Dhula police station in Darrang district.

The police said that Ray received the money as a reward for offering undue favors to protect the accused and to get the case dismissed.

Additional OC and SP Rupam Phukan were arrested by the police earlier. Phukan, who is now in police custody, allegedly received Rs 1.5 lakh.

Three doctors were also arrested who were accused of showing the death to be suicide after the reduction. They as well as the OC are in judicial custody.

The police were looking for an absconding judge, Ashirvad Hazarika, “whose role has been recorded”. The CID forces searched the homes of the arrested soldiers and seized criminal items.

A few days after the death of this little girl, the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited her home and ordered that the case be transferred to the CID after it emerged that the local police made mistakes in the investigation.

“The case was transferred to the CID on August 12, day after day it was directly monitored by senior officers, and a record of sufficient evidence was brought to prove the crimes of rape, murder, destruction of evidence, attempted rape and sex. child abuse under the POCSO Act,” the police said in a statement on Thursday.

The press release also stated that during the investigation, the CID recovered the body and conducted a second investigation.

The CID consulted a panel of medical experts and conducted a DNA test on the main accused, which matched the fluid on the victim’s clothes. Accordingly, the detailed charge sheet was filed on September 25 against the main accused, the news added.
