Litchfield, Ky. (WAVE) – A man who shot himself with his own gun will be charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened at Caneyville Elementary School last night around 7:30 p.m. (Central Time). Deputies called to the school about the shooting found Matthew C. Nash, 37, of Millwood, with a gunshot wound to the lower leg.

Nash was airlifted to a UOFL hospital. He was treated and released on Thursday morning.

Investigators say Nash had arrived at the school to pick up the children from basketball practice. Nash was running in the hallway with a small child when the 9mm handgun fell to the ground and fired.

None of the children were injured, but Nash, who was playing in the school’s hallway, was shot right behind the children playing basketball on the court.

The shooting has been called accidental, but Nash faces felony charges of unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and wanton endangerment.
