In an ambitious move to revamp the infrastructure of government schools in Assam, the state government has announced plans to upgrade the facilities of 1,000 such institutions into ‘new age’ schools.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on Sunday after inspecting the campuses of five schools in Guwahati, including one where he studied for several years.
“Government schools in Assam started as small buildings with additional classrooms added in different sections over the years, which took up space. Our aim would be to house all the classrooms in one building and keep the rest of the area in playgrounds. playing and other activities,” said Sarma.
The CM visited Sonaram High School, Government Collegiate Higher Secondary School, Kamrup Academy, Tarini Choudhury Government Girls High School and Middle School and Gopal Boro Government High School.
Sarma was a student of Kamrup Academy which was established in 1930. After inspecting his students, the CM said that the school building will be reconstructed and a new hall will be constructed soon.
“We want to transform our government schools into new age centers. Those schools that are over 100 years old and want to preserve the buildings, we will help them,” he said.
Sarma said that in the next few years, the state government will rebuild 1,000 schools with playgrounds with an allocated budget. ₹5,000 crore. There are ten such schools in Guwahati.
The minister is also expected to inspect five other schools in the city in the coming weeks.
Besides renovating existing schools, the government also plans to build 4,500 new ones in the coming years to match the facilities offered in private institutions.
