Legal history was made earlier this week after a man was ordered to stand trial under new domestic abuse laws.
his case against Dwayne Mullan has been elevated to the Crown Court.
District Judge Bernie Kelly, sentencing him for 14 years, said he “will be keen to see what happens as this is the first such charge I have seen”.
It is alleged that the crime was committed against Mullan’s ex-boyfriend over a period of five months until April this year.
He is said to have been “engaged in a form of behaviour” that calls for “physical or mental harm”.
That offense was created by a new domestic violence law that was put on the statute books earlier this year.
Mullan, who is currently in Maghaberry Prison but is on bail at Dingwell Park in Lurgan, has been charged with single offenses of wounding, attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, grievous bodily harm and ” bad at home”.
He also faces three counts of simple assault, two counts of threatening to kill and two counts of false imprisonment.
A prosecuting barrister at Craigavon Crown Court said it was a first case against Mullan, which was accepted by his defense barrister.
The defendant declined to comment on the allegations or call any evidence.
He was remanded in custody and will be retried in the case next month.
