Portland Ore. (KPTV) – Sherlyn Beaver turned 35, a week before her life was cut short.
She was shot and killed in Northeast Portland just before 8:30 p.m. last Wednesday, Portland police said. One person was shot and taken to hospital.
“I think we were all just numb. It was hard to believe because she was home,” Beaver’s mother, Rosalyn Hickmon, said.
Hickmon was devastated not to be able to see his daughter carry out her plans.
“She never had a chance to have children. So we are the grandchildren we never knew. She was going back to school to become an RN,” she said.
Police said it was the 82nd homicide and 68th shooting death the city of Portland has seen this year.
Although we don’t know the circumstances surrounding this shooting, Hickmon said he and Beaver supported Measure 114, a ballot measure this election cycle. People are required to pass a criminal background check, permit and complete safety training to purchase a firearm.
Hickmon said he’s glad to see it’s likely to pass based on the latest numbers, and thinks Beaver would have been, too.
“Accountability is required. Gun ownership is not a right, it is a privilege. “If you want that privilege, you have to take extra steps to make sure it doesn’t get into the wrong hands,” Hickmon said.
With gun law change likely on the horizon, she’s heartbroken for Portland families dealing with such a loss.
“We’ve become so desensitized to it, you know, people think, ‘That’ll never happen to me.’ We never thought, especially if it was the individual,” Hickmon said.
Beaver was one of four siblings, and aside from her infectious laugh and smile, Hickmon said she will miss their daily phone calls.
“Before we even talked on the phone, she always told me she loved me. “That’s basically it, to hear her speak once again,” she said.
